How to take a screenshot on Mac: Cmd+Shift+3 (full screen), Cmd+Shift+4 (selection or window), and Cmd+Shift+5 for options and recording.

Full screen

Cmd + Shift + 3 — Captures the entire screen and saves it to the Desktop (or your chosen location).

Selection or window

Cmd + Shift + 4 — Cursor becomes a crosshair. Drag to select a region. Press Space to switch to window capture (click a window to capture it).

Cmd + Shift + 5 — Opens the Screenshot app toolbar. Choose capture entire screen, capture window, or capture selected portion. You can also start screen recording and set save location (Desktop, Clipboard, etc.).

Where screenshots are saved

By default, screenshots are saved to the Desktop as PNG files. Use Cmd+Shift+5 → Options to change the save location or to copy to Clipboard only.
