- How are words normalized?
- Words are typically lowercased for counting (optional). Punctuation at the end of words (e.g. 'word.') is often stripped so 'word' and 'word.' count together.
- How many to show?
- You can usually set a limit (e.g. top 20 or top 50). All words are counted first, then sorted by frequency and the top N are listed.
- Stop words?
- Some tools let you exclude common words (the, a, is...) to see more meaningful top words. Otherwise every word is counted.
